Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, Anthony Phillips comes from one of the country’s most accomplished badminton families. His parents earned 44 South African national titles between them, establishing a competitive legacy that shaped Anthony’s early years.

A junior badminton champion himself, Anthony’s athletic career took an unexpected turn at age 16 when he was recruited to play professional baseball in the United States.

That opportunity launched a 17-year career across the Mariners, Phillies, Angels and Rockies organizations, followed by managerial roles with the Oakland Athletics. During spring training in Arizona in 2018, Anthony met AZBC founder Guy Chadwick. Their shared backgrounds in baseball and badminton created an immediate connection. When Anthony later stepped away from the extensive travel of professional baseball to remain closer to his family, AZBC offered a natural new next chapter.

After working closely with Guy and becoming deeply involved in the club’s operations, Anthony assumed responsibility for AZBC’s day-to-day leadership in 2023. Today, he serves as Club Pro and Director while continuing to compete internationally as a member of the South African national badminton team, including representing his country in Thomas Cup competition.

Anthony’s leadership brings together elite competition, professional sports experience and a lifelong connection to badminton—carrying AZBC’s legacy into its next era.
