Vision & Philosophy...
The vision of the Arizona Badminton Center is to provide the very best badminton-specific facility for players of all ages and ability levels 7 days a week year-round! Friends - Family - Fitness - Training.
For years badminton has been a second-rate sport in Arizona with no facility to call our own and no place for consistent badminton fitness and training. Although we are very thankful for the many locations that allow for badminton play usually once or twice a week for about 3 hours each session, these facilities are all multi-use gyms providing substandard badminton conditions. The limited amount of court time available also greatly deters the coaching and training opportunities that so many desire.
Badminton is a rapidly growing international sport with a huge following from recreational and PE participation on to the Olympic level of play. More than 130 nations have national governing bodies for the sport of badminton with a thriving schedule of professional tournaments world-wide. With its English origins badminton has a strong emphasis on sportsmanship and appeals to a wide range of ages from under 8 to over 80 and equally to men and women. Perhaps more than any other sport, badminton is suited to regular family participation.
In Arizona there is a long tradition of girls' Varsity and JV high school badminton teams. The AIA high school sport of badminton has been established for more than 50 years and forms an important basis for the playing and training opportunities we offer.
There is also a strong and growing recreational and club level badminton community in Arizona. This includes adult and senior players, many who participate in local, regional and national tournaments.
FAMILY FRIENDLY AND SAFE: The AZBC has clear rules and protections in place to see that our facility is family-friendly and safe for all members and guests at all times. We have a camera monitoring system. Coaching protocols will be strictly enforced and guidelines for participants clearly displayed.
BOTH RECREATIONAL PLAY AND SERIOUS TRAINING: The AZBC is all about providing the time and resources for BOTH recreational AND serious training members and guests. The regular weekly schedule will provide clear court priorities for ALL LEVELS of interested members and guests from the beginner to the tournament level.
See the AZBC "Hours and Schedule" page for more details.
COACHING PHILOSOPHY: As the Director and Club Pro of the AZBC with more than 40 years of tournament playing and coaching experience, having worked with novice to national team players, I am committed to developing a trust-worthy coaching staff, both volunteer and paid, that will work together to serve all players to reach their goals. I am strongly in favor of a team coaching approach knowing that considerate and experienced coaches each have something to offer interested players.
FITNESS - SKILL - STRATEGY - FOCUS: I see four primary areas for development in every player: Fitness, Skill, Strategy, Focus. No two players are alike and each have different strengths and weaknesses. Different coaches can help develop each of these areas in a player. No one coach can fully serve all players in all areas of their training needs. We will work to develop a place where coaches work together to provide for the individual needs of all players.
SPORTS SCIENCE: An exciting new development for the AZBC is sports science -- the study of badminton on a scientific level. Badminton provides a great opportunity as a largely unexplored sport with its inherent physical intensity and speed, fitness and health benefits. We are pursuing partnerships with nearby ASU and other technical institutions in this area. Many of our members have highly technical qualifications and access to equipment and resources that will lead to a better understanding of our great sport.
