CONSULTING FOR A BADMINTON BADMINTON FACILITY...
INTRODUCTION:
There is a new wave of badminton-specific facilities being built in the USA and around the world! This is fantastic for our sport, which we know to be a great lifetime activity for friendship, health, exercise and good competition. For more than 40 years I have hoped for this to happen knowing that badminton would never become a "legitimate" sport in the US if the infrastructure of adequate badminton-specific facilities was not in place. We could never depend on badminton becoming a part of the healthy options for society if we were only to be accessible in multi-use facilities. Can you imagine tennis trying to grow by laying down another set of lines in basketball gyms?! Every sport needs its own unique facilities to properly meet its sport-specific requirements.
For me, as for most other badminton club owners, building a badminton-specific club has occurred at great risk and expense, but is a result of years of experience in a sport I dearly love. From my original temporary facility attempt more than 25 years ago until finally finding a more permanent location more than 10 years ago, while including a constant participation on the coaching, playing and administrative level for more than 45 years, it has been a constant learning curve. I have also helped several new facilities with critical questions and their design elements.
As a Badminton-specific facility owner I am frequently asked detailed questions about every aspect of our unique business. Although this is a joy on one hand, it is also very time consuming and involves valuable information that has been gained by years of practical experience. There are also proprietary issues and protections that must be in place. Unfortunately, too often many badminton facilities have experienced individuals that have copied without permission methods, operations, mailing lists and other proprietary items to compete directly against the badminton facility they have copied. This has created an atmosphere of general distrust rather than cooperation among many badminton facilities. Hopefully we can be more honorable in the future!
CONSULTING SPECIFICS:
Generally, the questions most asked concern:
1) The viability of a specific location or choice of locations, including building structure and dimensions
2) The specific construction of the flooring, lighting, layout of the courts, and additional rooms
3) The list of start-up costs and capitalization required (which is far more extensive than typically estimated)
4) The organization options for the badminton facility business (individual vs. group ownership, profit vs. non-profit, etc)
5) Operational questions about membership, lessons, coaching, tournaments and activities, a Pro Shop, etc.
Every location is unique. Every opportunity will be different. Every building will necessitate some unique design and adaptation whether it is a build-to-suit or warehouse conversion. Every project will reflect in a unique way the leadership team and its goals, assets and weaknesses, the geography and overall demographics of the local badminton community.
For example, in Arizona we first must deal with the heat. A minimum of six months of the year we must have air conditioning and properly design the A/C system in the badminton hall for maximum efficiency so that it also does not interfere with the flight of the bird! Secondly, our badminton community tends to be more recreational with a relatively strong contingent of girls high school badminton. We do have a several good adult tournament level players and an unusually strong group of senior players. Our biggest hurdle was finding a building that had workable dimensions, ceiling height, clear span and structure in a location suitable for our badminton community that we could afford and add A/C. It took 25 years to find!
It has been worth the wait! Now that we have been in operation for more than 10 years we have proven that many of our structural designs are excellent and we are constantly learning to improve our operations. It is our desire to help others build the best possible badminton facility in their location especially in areas that currently do not enjoy a badminton-specific facility. Competition can be healthy between badminton facilities, but also detrimental, and it is far less productive than bringing new badminton-specific facilities to areas currently without one.
CONSULTING OPTIONS:
1) Some initial and basic questions can be answered at no charge
2) Consulting Fees can be negotiated depending on the size of the project and degree of involvement
- Expenses paid if travel is required
- Fees scheduled if a high degree of detail is requested regarding build out design, materials, time schedules, etc.
- Fees scheduled for follow through of build out and for business set up and operations
